< 출처 : http://www.d-war.com/ >     USAeduNews 와의 인터뷰     USAeduNews 2005년 10월 10일 D-War   할리우드는 이제 미국 박스오피스를 휩쓸 한국의 "디-워"의 개봉을 시작으로 그들의 뒤를 조심해야 할 것이다. 디워는 멋진 스크립트, 서스펜스를 주는 스토리 전개, 그리고 영구아트가 순수 국내 기술로 만들어낸 CG를 자랑할 뿐만 아니라, 요즘 한참 주가가 오르는 배우들과 노련한 스태프들도 자랑한다. 현재 전문가들의 멋진 평론이 나옴에 따라 디워는 이미 주목을 받고 있는 킹콩과 대적하게 될 것이다.   디워가 블록버스터가 될수있는 가능성을 확인 시켜준 것은 바로 심형래 감독이다. 심형래 감독은 그냥 유머러스한 정도가 아니라, 한국 국민들을 언제든지 웃게 만들 수 있다. 심형래 감독은 1980년도에 가장 유명하고 인기가 많은 코미디언이자 영화배우였다. 하지만 최근 심형래 감독은 새롭고 스케일이 더욱 큰 자리를 맡으며 자신을 새롭게 바꾸고 있다. 심형래 감독은 이제 무대 위에서가 아닌 무대 뒤에 활약을 보여 주게 되었다. 그는 이제 한국의 콘텐츠를 바탕으로 한 디워를 감독하고 있다.   디워에서 한국의 전설이 미국 LA도심에서 나오는 것이 하나도 어색하지 않다는 점은 바로 디워를 재미있고 할리우드에게 위협을 주는 영화가 되는 이유 중 한가지다. 디워에서 한국의 전설의 괴물인 이무기가 자신을 강력한 용으로 바꿔줄 여의주를 찾으며 시작된다. 이무기의 수색은 이무기의 군단으로 부터 자신들의 가족과 집을 지키려는 인간들과 맞서며 힘들게 되며 스토리는 더욱 재미있게 변한다. 스크립트가 모든 일을 다 할 순 없다. 디워를 제작하는데 도와준 사람들이 없었다면, 디워는 지금의 멋진 모습을 보지 못했을 수도 있었다. 디워의 스태프들은 그냥 스태프들이 아니다. 그들은 모두 자신들의 일에선 전문성과 노련성을 보이며 또 그들의 멋진 경력도 자랑할 수 있다. 촬영감독인 휴버트 태크자노우스키 감독은 "Deathwatch"를 통해 얻은 경험을 디워에서 이무기의 무리들이 주인공을 공격하는 모습을 찍으며 더욱 발전된 모습을 보여 준다. 게다가 조감독인 조나단 사우써드 감독은 수많은 아카데미 상을 받은 타이타닉에서도 활약을 펼쳤다.   하지만 그게 끝이 아니다. 만약 심형래 감독이 전설에 생명을 불어 넣어 줬다면, 캐릭터들에게 깊이와 생명을 준건 바로 배우들이였다. 디워에서 세라역을 맡은 아만다 브룩스를 수호하는 이든역을 맡은 제이슨 베어는 이미 공상과학 TV시리즈인 로즈웰과 미국 박스오피스 1위를 차지했던 주온의 리메이크판인 '그루지'에도 주연으로 출연했다. 게다가 "인크레더블"에서 목소리로 출연했던 엘리자베스 페나, "Jackie Brown"과 다른 많은 영화에 출연했던 로버트 포스터와 "라디오"에 출연했던 크리스 멀키도 디워에 등장한다.   그런데 도대체 왜 심형래 감독은 공상과학영화를 고집하는 것일까? 그의 첫번째 큰 영화인 용가리는 미국 비디오 렌탈시장에서 3주동안 1위를 차지했음에도 불구하고 완전 실패작이 되고 말았다. 거기에 평론가들은 딱 잘라 용가리가 실패작이라고 말했다.   "실패라는 것과 성공이라는 것은 자기 자신의 마음속에서만 존재 하는 것입니다." 라고 심형래 감독은 말한다. 그의 말에 따르면 용가리는 실패작이 전혀 아니였다. "용가리가 없었다면 디워도 없었을 것입니다." 이제 감독으로써 심형래 감독은 전 세계에 할리우드만이 블록버스터 영화를 만들 수 있는 것이 아니라는 것을 보여 줄 것이다.   심형래 감독의 집념과 열정은 불타고 있다. 그의 모든 미국 스태프들이 LA안에 탱크들을 끌고 들어와 촬영 하는 것은 불가능 하다고 모두 입을 모아 말했을 때, 심형래 감독은 그것을 해냈다. 9/11테러가 있은후 미국의 영화사들은 도시들을 파괴하는데 소극적이었다. 물론 미국 스태프들도 마찬가지였다. 하지만 심형래 감독은 그냥 포기하지 않고 몇몇 윗사람들에게 편지를 보냈다.   편지를 받은 사람은 아놀드 슈워제네거 주지사, LA 시장, 그리고 LAPD 총장이 속해 있었다. 눈 깜짝할 사이에 이미 심형래 감독은 탱크들과 함께 LA도심에서 모으는데만 3년이 걸렸던 그의 드림 스태프들과 촬영을 하고 있었다. "세상에 정해진 룰은 없다. 역사는 우리가 스스로 만들어 내는 거다." 심형래 감독이 인터뷰를 하며 지속적으로 하는 말이다. 저 말이 바로 심형래 감독의 인생을 보여주는것 같다. 그는 용가리를 찍기 시작했을때 한국에서는 공상과학 영화가 나올 수 없다는 룰을 깨고 역사를 탄생시켰다.   용가리의 실패를 맛본 후, 심형래 감독은 디워를 찍기 시작 했을 때 또 다시 역사를 만들었다. 심형래가 아니고 서야 그 누구도 큰 실패를 그냥 잊어버리고 적어도 10배는 좋은 영화를 만들 수 있는 사람이 있을까? 그는 이제 디워를 전미 박스오피스 1위에 올려 놓아 다시 한 번 역사를 만들 것이다,   물론 한국의 영화는 블록버스터가 될 수 없다는 룰을 깨면서... "많은 사람들은 지금 심형래 감독을 비웃고 있다. 할리우드를 꺾는 건 불가능하다고 말한다. 하지만 심형래 감독님, 아니 우리는 그가 할 수 있다는 것을 믿는다," 디워의 팬인 신진욱씨가 말했다, "그리고 그는 조금도 틀리지 않았다. 우리는 모두 그를 믿는다."   디워는 이제 2006년 여름으로 잡혀 있는 개봉날을 향해 부드럽게 순항하고 있다. 아직 배급사는 알려지지 않았지만 지금 영구아트와 심형래 감독은 비밀리에 일을 성사시키고 있다. 현재로선 디워는 95% 완료가 되어있고 편집, 뮤직, CG 완료, 등등이 이루어지는 나머지 5%가 남았다. 디워의 개봉날이 현재까지 계속하여 미루어지는 것을 보아 우리는 디워가 2006년 여름에 볼 수 없을지도 모른다. 하지만 우리는 모두다 심형래 감독님을 믿고 있다.   여러분의 글이 심형래 감독님께 큰 힘이 됩니다. 많은 격려와 의견을 부탁드립니다.   USAeduNews Oct 10, 2005 D-War   Hollywood may have to watch its back! A Korean movie, “D-War”, might mercilessly strike the American box office once it is released in theaters. This science fiction movie not only boasts a fresh, dynamic script and suspenseful plot and unmatched computer graphics (thanks to Younggu-art Entertainment), but also an army of talented staff and stars. Critics have responded so positively to D-War that it will seriously contend against Peter Jackson’s “King Kong,” which is already receiving attention (It certainly helps that he directed “Lord of the Rings”). What makes D-War such a potential buzz is its director, Hyung-Rae Shim. Shim has a great sense of humor, especially since he has been making Koreans laugh with him, as one of Korea’s most celebrated comedian and recognized actor since the 1980s. Recently, Shim has been spending time redefining himself, taking the spotlight in a different capacity. Rather than being in the center of stage (usually, surrounded by an audience roaring with laughter), Shim is now taking a background role. He is directing a science fiction movie, “D-War,”?a cross between “Jurassic Park” and “The Lord of the Rings” in a Korean context. What makes “D-War” riveting?or even threatening to Hollywood?is that Shim beautifully incorporates Korean legends and sets them in bustling LA. In the movie, Shim captures the struggles of the mythological creature, Imoogi, who attempts obtains the Yeouijoo, a pendent that allows it to metamorphosize into the formidable dragon, which is viewed as a divine. The plot thickens when Imoogi confronts the humans, who try to defend their homes against the threat of Imoogi’s army. Besides the captivating script, the movie would be nowhere without the sum of its parts. The staffs are not any ordinary players in the movie. In fact, they are well decorated with experience and can boast a resume filled with recognizable projects. The director of photography, Hubert Taczanowski, brings his experience from “Deathwatch” to capture suspenseful scenes like when Imoogi, the antagonist, tries to sink his teeth into the protagonist. Moreover, the first assistant director, Jonathan Southard, brings his skills from his stint working on the Academy Winner the “Titanic” to develop the characters and the scenes. But that’s not all. If Shim brought the myth to life, it is the actors that gave the characters depth. Jason Behr, in the role of Ethan, protects Amanda Brooks, who plays Sarah. Behr’s experience on “Roswell,” a Sci-Fi TV series, and “Grudge,” a horror-fiction movie that was a box office hit for a week, made him feel at home in carrying out his role crossing swords with aliens and monsters. There are also Elizabeth Pena from “The Incredibles,” Robert Foster from “Jackie Brown,” and Chris Mulkey from “Radio.” Now why is Shim dabbling with science fiction movies?again?  Though his first big movie, “Reptilian” (Yonggary), topped the America video rental market for three weeks, it was considered a flop. Critics bluntly offered him three words of wisdom, “The movie sucked!” “Failure?as well as success?only exists in the mind,” Shim expressed. “Reptilian” was not a failure but an opportunity. “Without ‘Reptilian’, Shim said, “there would be no D-War.” As a director, now, Shim hopes to show the world that not only Hollywood can make “blockbuster” Sci-Fi movies, but that Korea can also produce a blockbuster hit, too. Shim’s determination in making this movie is on fire. When his American staff claimed that it was impossible to shoot a scene with military tanks coming into the city of LA, he made it possible. After the horrid 9/11, the movie industry has been sensitive about depicting a city destroyed and Shim’s staff was not any different. Instead of dampening his imagination, Shim called a few friends in high places, including the “governator,” mayor of LA, and to the LAPD. Within the blink of an eye, tanks rolled in the streets of LA and Shim was shooting his scene with his dream team staff, which took him three years to put together. “There is no rule in the world. It is us who create history,” Shim continuously says in interviews. That line is a one that can describe Shim’s life. He went against the rule of Korean movie industries?no Sci Fi MOVIES?and created history when he started to shoot “Yonggary.” When “Yonggary” agonizingly failed, Shim again created history when he started to shoot “D-War.” What kind of person can just forget about his failure and goes onto making a better?at least by ten folds?movie? Shim now hopes to create history again?of course by breaking the “rules”?by putting “D-War” No.1 in the American box office. “Many people might be laughing at saying that it is impossible for us to defeat Hollywood, but Shim believes?we believe?that he can make it,” a D-War fan Jinwook Shin says, “And he’s right. We all believe in him.” “D-War” is now cruising smoothly to its opening day?which is presumed to be about the summer of 2006. The movie’s distributor is yet to be known, as Yonggu-art Entertainment and Shim are reclusively working on signing the contract. As of today, the movie is 95% finished and the last of 5%?which includes editing, music, give a final touch to the important CGs, and etc. Well until the summer of next year?and that’s a huge maybe since “D-War’s presumed opening dates was postponed for numerous times?we will have to wait to see the movie. Director Shim, we all believe in you.         [U] 미국 현지 반응 설문조사! 2005 0812 2005년 8월 12일에 다시한번 우리 커뮤니티 80인치 스크린 극장에 갔습니다. 요번엔 100개 정도 되는 좌석들을 꽉 채었습니다 실제인원수는 137명이였습니다. 그중 -17명이 아시안- 13남자 4여자 -91명이 백인- 61남자 30여자 -29명이 흑인-19남자 10여자 였습니다. 나이층은 1~10=24명          10~20=79명          20~30=26명          30~40=8명 일단 볼때는 조용하더군요, 아니면 소리가 너무 크게 나서 아무것도 안들릴 수도 있고요. 하지만 저도 조용히 "관람" 하며 또다시 감동하며 보았습니다. 한 영상, 영상들이 끝날때 마다 박수소리가 커다란 스피커에서 나오는 귀를 먹일정도로 큰 소리를 안들리게 할정도였습니다. 일단 모든 영상들이 끝나고 사람들이 웅성거리기 시작할때, 모든사람들에게 각각 한장에 종의와 연필들을 나누어 주어 자기 의견을 쓰게 하였습니다. 137장에 글들을 읽고 분석하고 정리하느라 밤을 새고 말았습니다. 정말 피곤했지만, 디워를 위해 열심히 일했다는 생각에 보람을 느꼈습니다. 그럼이제 137장에 글들을 모두 올리는건 그렇고 그들중 모든생각들을 3가지로 통합하는 4개에글을 올립니다. 올리기 전에 부정, 긍정, 아무 의견없음으로 글들을 분류했습니다. 부정-43 긍정-75 뚜렸한 의견없은-19 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 긍정적 글 Roger WuFu-성:남자 나이:만 19살 인종:중국인(완전미국화..) 직업:학생 Awesome. I truly believe that this movie provides some excellent views, but in my point of view, Imoogi and the Yeouijoo are awkward for us to pronounce and do not give the sense of wanting to know more. Even though those little, maybe big, problems might become an obstacle, I believe that D-War can success through view and showing LA getting destroyed (I don't know why, but I find pleasure in seeing American cities getting destroyed). 객관적으로 볼때, 난 [디워에]멋진 영상을 꽤 즐겼다. 하지만 난 이무기나 여의주에 대해서 별 흥미를 느끼지 못했다. 난 솔직히 이 영화가 멋진 영상을 보여주지만 이무기나 여의주는, 내가 생각하기에, 발음하기가 조금 어색하고 그것들에 대해 더욱 알고싶은 생각을 주진 않는다고 생각한다. 이런 조그마한, 클수도 있다, 문제들이 장애물이 될수도 있지만, 디워는 영상과 LA가 부셔지는것을 통해 성공할수 있다고 믿고있다 (나도 왠진 모르지만, 미국에 도시들이 보셔지는것을 보는것에 재미를 느낀다). 맨 마지막에 코멘트 조금 웃기는 군요. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 긍정적 글 Andrea Marinez-성: 여자 나이:만 34 직업: 주부? 인종: 히스패닉 I like the movie for three reasons. The first reason is that this movie can provide some information on Oriental, or Asian, legend. The second reason is that this movie is not too horrible. For example, I can't watch Troy, Jurassic Park, or any kind of war movies with my child, who is only 6 years old. But I think D-War is ok for my child to watch, even though the movie contains some violence. The last and the most important reason is that D-War isn't American! It isn't the production of any Hollywood movie producers. I'm tired of watching the same American movies. They are all about extreme violence, sex, love, stupid comedy, and Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. 난 이 영화를 세가지 이유로 좋아한다. 첫번째 이유는 이 영화가 오리엔탈, 혹은 아시아에 전설들에 대한 정보들을 줄수 있기때문이다. 두번째 이유는 이 영화가 너무 잔인하지 않다는 점이다. 예를 들어서 트로이, 쥬라기 공원, 그리고 그 어떠한 전쟁 영화들은 여섯살인 내 아이와 볼수 없다. 하지만 내 생각에 디워는 내 아이가 봐도 괜찮을것 같다, 조금 잔인함이 있긴 하지만. 마지막 그리고 가장 중요한 점은, 디워는 미국이 만든게 아니란 점이다! [디워는] 헐리웃에서 만든 영화가 아니라는 것이다. 난 이제 거기거 거기인 미국 영화들을 보는것에 지쳤다. 이제, 미국영화들은 모조리 엄청난 잔인성, 섹스 (아줌마 오버?), 사랑, 바보같은 코미디, 그리고 브래드 피트나 안젤리나 졸리에 대한것이기 때문이다! 브래드 피트, 안젤리나 졸리에 대한 코멘트는 미국 영화가 너무 유명 연예인들에 의존 한다는 것에 대한겄입니다. 그런데 아줌마께서 조금 오버하신것 같군요. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 뚜렸한 의견없음-성:남자 나이:41 직업:비즈니스 인종:잘모르겟음.
